Living along Alabama's Gulf Coast means dealing with plenty of rain. When gutters fill with leaves, pine needles and other debris, water can spill over the sides instead of flowing through the downspouts. The right cleaning schedule depends on your property, not just the calendar.
Start with two inspections a year
For many homes, inspecting gutters in the spring and fall is a sensible starting point. That doesn't mean every home needs cleaning on exactly the same schedule. If you have trees close to your roof, you may need to check and clean your gutters more often.
Pine needles can build up quickly
Pine straw can collect in gutters and around downspout openings. Even when a gutter looks fairly clear from the ground, a clog at the outlet can prevent water from draining properly. Homes under or near pine trees deserve extra attention.
Check after strong storms
Wind can drop leaves, twigs and other debris onto the roof. After severe weather has passed and conditions are safe, look from the ground for visible buildup, sagging sections or signs of overflow. Avoid climbing ladders or walking on wet or damaged roofs.
Five signs it's time to clean your gutters
- Rainwater spills over the gutter edge during a storm.
- Plants or weeds are growing in the gutters.
- Leaves or pine straw are visibly packed along the roofline.
- Downspouts appear to drain slowly or not at all.
- Water is collecting near the foundation where it didn't before.
What about hurricane season?
Keeping gutters and downspouts clear is a useful part of routine home maintenance before periods of heavy rain. It won't protect a house from hurricane damage, but it can help the drainage system do its intended job during ordinary rainfall. Don't attempt gutter work when storms are approaching or conditions are unsafe.
What schedule makes sense for your home?
A home with few nearby trees may need less frequent cleaning than a home surrounded by pines and oaks. The most useful habit is to check for buildup regularly and respond to signs of poor drainage before a small clog becomes a bigger mess.
